Earthship: A Most Radically Sustainable Home

Earthship: A Most Radically Sustainable Home

We have had the privilege of staying a night in the Phoenix, a Taos, New Mexico Earthship. These friendliest of eco-friendly homes were conceived by architect Michael Reynolds, nicknamed the garbage warrior. He fought for many years to build these off-grid homes and eventually succeeded in getting building permits.

The Earthship design principles:

Earthship.com: An Earthship is a radically sustainable home made out of recycled materials. Electricity: from sun and wind. Water: from rain and snow. Sewage: sanitary treatment. Heating and Cooling: from the sun and the earth. Food: grown inside and outside the home…

Not only are the homes completely off-grid and built using mostly recycled materials, they use sustainable principles far surpassing other homes. They also have incredible character. Staying in the Phoenix was magical and a delightful example of found and recycled products turned into usable building materials.

One of the great advantages these homeowners have is that they are usually directly involved in building their own homes and can end up having very little debt.

  1. The earthship has a great concept that makes a lot of sense. Even if you build a different type of home you can also use some of the principles such as using recycled/upcycled materials and banking a new built home, using the earth for partial insulation. A front greenhouse not only gives you passive solar properties it also helps to light your home as well as freshen the air.

    Glad you liked the post.

  2. Just be yourself. I think it gets easier as you go. If you can give an audience unique comments they will eventually find you and follow your stories. Good luck.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.

  15. Great post with lots of important stuff.

  16. Quite a fascinating style this house has. Recycled materials obviously push the building project towards less harmonious look, but here the builder has managed to pick the materials so that they have a beautiful design in the end. Good job!
